Description: The Carne Mirandesa PDO beef is made with bovine meat of Mirandesa breed. It’s a meat with fat evenly distributed and light pink color to light red color.
Production method: The cows are reared in traditional in system, between the cultivated fields and the marshes from north-eastern of Trás-os-Montes region.
Distinctive features: The Mirandesa Breed has genetic features that associated to the natural diet gives to the Carne Mirandesa PDO beef distinct organoleptic qualities such as its flavor and succulence.
This beef can be sold as: “carne de vitela” from cows slaughtered between 5 and 9 months old and “carne de novilho”, cows slaughtered between 10 and 18 months old.
Production area: Carne Mirandesa PDO is produced in the municipal areas of Bragança, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Miranda do Douro, Mogadouro, Vimioso and Vinhais, in the Bragança district.
History: The first bibliographic reference of Mirandesa cattle breed backs to the 1286, made by D. Dinis. In this document the king of Portugal recorded Mirandesa cattle in the Freixo municipality in Trás-os-Montes region.
Then, in 1870, Bernardo Lima described this animals being from Planalto Mirandês, emphasizing his physic characteristics as the corpulence, the strength and the weight.
In 1959 is formulated the regulation of Genealogic Book of Mirandesa cattle breed and in 70 decade is developed the book “Cattle from Portugal”, where is described this breed.
