Description: Ginja de Óbidos e Alcobaça is the name given to the fruit of the ‘Galega’ cultivar, a member of the Rosaceae family, sub-family of stone fruit, genus Prunus, species Prunus cera-sus L., obtained in the geographical area, essentially characterised by its red colour, small size, slightly flattened form.

Production method: The specific steps in pro-duction that must take place in the delimited geographical area are the production and har-vesting of the fruit. The area where the ‘Ginja de Óbidos e Alcobaça’ is produced lies between the Candeeiros mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, which means it has a very specific micro-climate typical of the delimited geographical area. In addition to favourable soils, the production conditions are such that they give the ‘Ginja de Óbidos e Alcobaça’ a high organoleptic quality and specific characteristics ,that distinguish it from sour cherries obtained in other regions.

Special features: The ‘Ginja de Óbidos e Alcobaça’ produced in the delimited geographical area, are essentially characterised by their red colour, high percentage of sugar and high acidity, which gives them a balanced bitter-sweet flavour and intense aroma, essential characteristics for their use as an ingredient in the production of foodstuffs that include this product.

Production area: From an administrative perspective, the geographical area of production of ‘Ginja de Óbidos e Alcobaça’ is limited to the municipalities of Óbidos, Alcobaça, Nazaré, Caldas da Rainha, Bombarral, Cadaval, and the parishes of Juncal, Calvaria de Cima, Pedreiras, Porto de Mós (São João Baptista), Porto de Mós (São Pedro), Serro Ventoso and Arrimal in the municipality of Porto de Mós.

History: Monks established farms on good agricultural land, which correspond to the current areas where the ‘Ginja de Óbidos e Alcobaça’ is produced and from which they dominated all commercial trade in the area.
More recent records testify to the reputation of ‘Ginja de Óbidos e Alcobaça’ which has been the subject of information days, workshops and various outreach activities. ‘Ginja de Óbidos e Alcobaça’ has been mentioned both in the regional press and by various sectoral associa-tions as a quality fruit of interest for the geographical area.
