Laranja de Amares

Laranja de Amares

Description: Fruit of regular shape, spherical, reddish-yellow color, with thin skin and very juicy.

Region: North.

Special feature: Orange whose overripeness allows it to be consumed from May to August, remaining on the tree until consumption.

History: Amares is a fertile region of the municipality of Braga, with a microclimate that allows it to produce wine, cereal and oranges. The Orange of Amares, more than a consumer product, is a symbol. It is part of the county's coat of arms and school children, when representing it, carry oranges in their hands. In ancient times, a basket of oranges was taken to the bishop of the diocese as a symbol of vassalage. Currently there is also an annual fair - Feira Franca - where farmers present oranges in competition to obtain prizes. In this event, the health status of the peel, its thickness, the amount of juice and sugar are assessed. Amares is mentioned by Henrique de Barros as being a region of production of very good oranges.

Use: Consumed as is, it can also be used for sweets, puddings, etc.

Know-how: The propagation of the tree is done by grafting or alporque, choosing the trees with the best fruits. Its harvest is tailored to the needs, sold at fairs and markets in the region. The fruit can also be sold on the tree, leaving the buyer with the possibility of harvesting the fruit whenever he wants, in whole or in part.
