Description: The Alfândega da Fé Cherry is the fruit obtained from cherry trees (Prunus avium L), with a caliber equal to or greater than 24 mm.
Special Characteristics: The Alfândega da Fé Cherry has an epidermis with a color between values 2 and 4, according to the CTIFL scale, has an acidity of 9-10 g/l and the content of soluble solids equal to or greater than 12º Brix.
Production area: The geographical area of production of the Alfandega da Fé Cherry is limited to the following municipalities and parishes: Municipality of Alfândega da Fé; Chacim, Grijó, Lombo, Peredo, Vale Benfeito and Union of Parishes of Bornes and Burga, in the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros; Caravelas and Union of Parishes of Freixeda and Vila Verde, in the municipality of Mirandela; Castro Vicente, in the municipality of Mogadouro; Horta da Vilariça and Union of Parishes of Adeganha and Cardanha, in the municipality of Torre de Moncorvo; and Benlhevai, Sampaio, Santa Comba da Vilariça, Trindade and the Union of Parishes of Assares and Lodões, in the municipality of Vila Flor.
History: Thanks to its organoleptic and qualitative characteristics, the cherry of Alfândega da Fé has been asserting itself over the years as the main brand image of this municipality in the Northeast of Trás-os-Montes – especially after the strong impulse registered in its production from the 60s of the twentieth century – assuming great importance in the local and regional economy.
